There are many good reasons to record our adventures through life. For me one of the best is Reflection. This is really another way of saying "Stop and think about it.
My favorite author and literary mentor C.S. Lewis described a split between "enjoyment" and "contemplation." Not to say that we can't enjoy our contemplation, he was using the term enjoyment in a narrowed sense to refer to direct experience. His point is that contemplation always involves a certain separation from that experience. When we contemplate or reflect we are thinking about a remembered experience, even if it just happened a few minutes ago. Or perhaps we are considering some future options, imagining what might happen. In either case this type of thinking puts us in touch with transcendence, the ability to "step back" or "step outside" of ourselves and look at our own lives, even our feelings and motivations, more objectively.
I wrote about this with some of my "Cave" friends in mind. I wanted to describe the ambiance we have cultivated at our Friday afternoon philosophy discussions. I also wanted to challenge other friends towards this kind of thinking. Socrates is often quoted as saying "the unexamined life is not worth living."
The Pause
Time to reflect, ponder and steep consider more fully things that are deep conscious thoughts tell us more than we know searching it out is a process that's slow Attention to what's going on in my head and my heart and my gut, is so oft left unsaid Thinking's a chore, though some think it fun if you're reading this, you just might be one Quiet and books and a chair that is soft some like a basement, but I like a loft Place is important and just the right space alone with yourself but dependent on grace Commune with your Maker who sees all and knows whence your life comes and whither it goes Learn how to number your days and be glad gain an awareness of what makes you sad Wisdom will show you what's in your heart be still and listen, that's a good start Finding the Truth is worth all that you have The Way and the Life and every good path.
