Why Worry? Be Happy!

"Worrying works pretty well for me, because 90 percent of the things I worry about never happen!" I think most of us know that worrying is a waste of time, so we might say: "I'm not worried, just a little 'concerned.'"

Have you ever wondered if people who are happy all the time are just acting irresponsibly? Can you be serious and happy at the same time?

Most of us move back and forth between moods, I think that's pretty normal. But is there an underlying peace and contentment that can remain consistent, in spite of our changing moods? I believe there is. And I'm pretty sure it comes as a result of where we place our trust.

Trusting comes naturally for children. We all start out trusting those who care for us, be it mother, father, or older siblings. But sooner or later we run into things that can't be trusted. We develop fears, of heights, of water, of dogs. People betray our trusting hearts. Neighborhood kids, bullies at school, even those God has put in our lives to care for us: teachers, babysitters, siblings and even parents.

What do we do when our distrust of people and circumstances leads to anxiety that robs us of peace and joy? What if our seriousness leads to sadness, and concern becomes constant worrying? The Bible offers us these comforting truths:

  • Cast all your cares on him, for he cares for you.

  • Don't worry about anything, but in all things ask God, and give thanks.

  • For we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.

As with much other revealed truth, the challenge is helping what we "know" in our heads to find its way into our hearts! Henri Nouwen defines meditation as "Drawing down truth from our heads to our hearts."

I find that reminding myself of God's care for me, thanking him and asking for help, brings my problems in contact with His provision. I'm not ignoring my cares and concerns, but as they come to mind I pray about them in line with His promises. "And the peace of God which passes understanding" guards my heart and mind.
